VAT calculator: add VAT or remove it from a price

Price with VAT = Price without VAT × (1 + VAT rate). At 20%, a ₺1,000 item becomes ₺1,200 and the VAT is ₺200. To go back, divide the gross price by (1 + rate): ₺1,200 ÷ 1.20 = ₺1,000. Taking 20% off the gross price is the common mistake; it gives ₺960.

How it's worked out

Price with VAT

Price without VAT × (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100)

Price without VAT

Price with VAT ÷ (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100)

VAT inside a price

Price with VAT × VAT rate ÷ (100 + VAT rate)

How to use it

  1. If your price excludes VAT, choose “Add VAT”; if it already includes VAT, choose “Remove VAT”.
  2. Enter the amount: one item's price, an invoice total or a day's takings.
  3. Enter the VAT rate; if you're not sure, use the rate on the invoice.
  4. Read the price with VAT, the price without it and the VAT in between; send the result on WhatsApp or copy it.

Watch out

  • Don't take a percentage off the gross price: 20% off ₺1,200 gives ₺960, but the price without VAT is ₺1,000. Divide by 1.20 instead.
  • Work out your margin on the price without VAT; VAT isn't your money, you pass it on. Use the profit margin calculator with the net figure.
  • VAT on an undocumented expense can't be reclaimed: without a receipt or invoice, the VAT inside a purchase doesn't come off the VAT you owe.
  • Penny differences come from rounding; an invoice rounded line by line and VAT worked out on the total can differ by a few pennies.

Frequently asked questions

How do you remove VAT from a price?

Divide the price that includes VAT by (1 + the VAT rate). At 20%, ₺1,200 ÷ 1.20 = ₺1,000 is the price without VAT and the ₺200 in between is the VAT. At 10% divide by 1.10, at 5% by 1.05. To find the VAT directly, multiply the price by the rate and divide by (100 + rate): 1,200 × 20 ÷ 120 = ₺200.

Which VAT rate should I use?

It depends on your country and on what you sell: most countries have a standard rate and one or more reduced rates for things like food or restaurant services. The rate for an item is on its invoice; if you're unsure, ask your accountant. This calculator works with any rate, so type in the one that applies.

How is the VAT I owe worked out?

Roughly: the VAT on the invoices you issued for your sales, minus the VAT on your documented purchases and expenses. If the difference is positive you pay it; if it's negative it carries forward. Your accountant works out the exact figure, but knowing roughly what's coming during the month saves a surprise at the end.

Should my selling price include VAT?

The price a customer sees should include VAT: the shelf or menu price is what they pay. Your cost and profit sums use the price without VAT, because the VAT is passed on. An item you sell for ₺1,200 at 20% VAT brings you ₺1,000 of income.

In Çetele you note the invoices you issue and mark each purchase “Invoice · Receipt · None”; the Tax screen shows an estimate of the VAT you'll owe this month and your undocumented spending.
